Istanbul Red in the Context of Adaptation Studies in Cinema
Abstract
Cinema, from its beginning to the present day, utilizes many sources such as story, novel, theater, etc. Especially adaptations made from novels have an important place in the development of cinema. In this study, Ferzan Ozpetek’s film ‘Istanbul Kırmızısı’ (2019) and the novel of the same name are discussed in line with the theoretical approaches in adaptation studies. The aim of the study is to reveal how the novel, which is the source text, is transferred to the film, the similarities and differences between them. The movie was selected by the purposeful sampling method. The reason for choosing this movie is that both the director of the movie and the author of the novel are the same person. In the study, the novel and the film were evaluated according to the characters, plot, theme, temporal and spatial changes and intertextuality approach in the context of orientalism. As a result of the study, it was determined that while the themes were continuous in both texts, the plot and characters differed. Both texts take place in Istanbul. However, the micro-regions inside Istanbul differ. It is seen that there is a three-year time difference between the novel and the film examined.
