Representation of the lost people Gypsies in Turkish cinema: Gönül (2022) movie analysis

Abstract

Gypsies, a community that has not reached definitive conclusions about their history, continue their lives all over the world. These people, who are evaluated with different names in the lands they live in around the world, continue their lives with similar difficulties despite being in different geographies. These lives of Gypsies have also been the subject of cinema and represented by stereotypical narratives. The representation of Gypsies in Turkish cinema has also found a place within the framework of these stereotypical narratives. This study aims to analyze the representation of the branch of Gypsies living in Anatolia and defined as Dom in Turkish cinema through the film Gönül (2022). For this purpose, qualitative content analysis method was used in the study. As a result of the study, it is seen that the movie focuses on the life of Dom by avoiding certain stereotypes, but stereotypical situations are also repeated.
