Motherhood Theme in Painting by Female Artists

In this research, it was aimed to examine the reflection of motherhood theme on painting by women artists. The first examples of the subject appeared in the 18th century and increased afterwards. For this reason, woman artists included who produced works during the period end of the 18th century to the 20th century; Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, Marie-Nicole Dumont, Berthe Morisot, Cecile Walton, Käthe Kollwitz, Marry Cassat, Leonora Carrington, Dorotthe Tanning, Semiha Berksoy, Paula Becker- Modersohn, Alice Neel, Neş’e Erdok and March Avery have been featured. These women painters reinterpreted motherhood that was shaped by a patriarchal approach and tried to create a representation of their own. Making these efforts of female painters visible, theses and articles in the field of sociology around the concept of motherhood were also used and data collection were carried out on the subject; artist web sites were examined, the thoughts of art writers were used. As a result, it was seen that artists brought a critical perspective to gender roles through the theme of motherhood and shaped the periods they lived in. In this context, it was concluded that women artists changed the reflections of motherhood in the art of painting and contributed to social transformation.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, annelik temasını eserlerinde işleyen kadın sanatçıların yapıtlarını incelemektir. Bu yapıtların ilk örnekleri 18. yüzyılda ortaya çıkmış ve sonrasında örnekler artmaya başlamıştır. Bu nedenle hazırlanan çalışmada 18. yüzyılın sonlarından 20. yüzyıla kadar uzanan süreçte annelik temasını ele alan kadın sanatçılar; Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, Marie-Nicole Dumont, Berthe Morisot, Cecile Walton, Käthe Kollwitz, Marry Cassat, Semiha Berksoy, Paula Becker- Modersohn, Leonora Carrington, Dorotthe Tanning, Alice Neel, Neş’e Erdok ve March Avery’in eserlerine yer verilmiştir. Bu kadın ressamlar, ataerkil yaklaşımla biçimlenen annelik olgusunu, geleneksel bakış açısını yeniden yorumlamış ve kendilerine ait temsiliyet alanı yaratmaya çabalamışlardır. Kadın ressamların bu çabalarını görünür kılmak araştırmanın önemini açığa çıkarır. Araştırma süresince annelik kavramı çevresinde sosyoloji alanındaki tez ve makalele gibi çalışmalardan da yararlanılmış, konu hakkında araştırma, inceleme ve veri toplama işlemi yapılmış, sanatçı web siteleri incelenmiş, sanat yazarlarının düşüncelerinden faydalanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda sanatçıların, toplumsal cinsiyet rollerine eleştirel bir bakış getirdikleri ve yaşadıkları dönemleri şekillendirdiği görülmüştür. Bu bağlamda kadın sanatçıların resim sanatında annelik yansımalarının değişmesine vesile olduğu ve toplumsal dönüşüme katkı sağladığı sonucuna varılmıştır.
