Loss of Reality: Political Humor in The Movie Don't Look Up

Abstract

Post-truth is the unreal transfer of truth to the public masses as a result of personal feelings or various relationship based on interests. The post- truth, which is closely related to politics, has started to attract more attention as misinformation quickly reaches individuals in new media environments. Considering this information; the aim of this study is to examine how reality is manipulated in the movie “Don’t Look Up”. It is also aimed to reveal how the perception of the presidency is created in the aforementioned movie in the context of political humour, and to determine what kind of messages are given based on the data obtained. The importance of the study is that the aforementioned movie has just been released and that there has not been a study similar to the subject discussed in the literature. The movie was analyzed with the semiotic analysis method based on Roland Barthes’s concepts of denotation and connotation. As a result of the analyzes; in the context of humour, it is observed that the facts such as political and individual self-interest, indifference, opposition to scientists and scientific findings, and distortion of reality are frequently emphasized.
