The Turkish History in Necati Cumalı’s Theaters

Abstract

The idea of depicting historical material on the stage from the first examples we encountered in modern theater continues to remain in the area of interest of contemporary theater. Necati Cumalı, who brought many plays to Turkish theater, deals with the recent period of Turkish history in two of his plays. The first of these is the right-left conflicts that known as the 12th March Memorandum in political history which disturbs the society and is mostly carried out over the youth. The second is the life of Namık Kemal who played an important role in the construction of modern literature and is an important name in terms of our history of thought, which is full of adventures in which it is told in a documentary quality. In particular the piece which he carried on the stage with the name Yürüyen Geceyi Dinle and tells about the period of 12th March was not welcomed by some people due to language he used and it was claimed that the language used by Necati Cumalı in this play harmed the revolution. However, the message of the game given by a leftist intellectual who has never gone out of law in his life and through the general acceptance of the society contains a language that is very necessary for the period. Namık Kemal’s short but full life struggle is not just his own time; it is handled as the first and most important sparks of the fire of independence and freedom that ignited in Anatolia much later. Trough his exciting works, the next period is carried over and constitutes the starting point of the idea of the Republic. Necati Cumalı achieves the original language he uses in all his plays without breaking the tradition. With all these features, Necati Cumalı is one of the original names of our literature.
