The Effect of Casting on the Film Structure: An Example of Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Cinema

This study aims to find out how a director’s casting affects a movie’s language and narrative at cinema. In this study, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s cinema is examined and; the increase in dialogues at his movies, getting dramatized of his cinema consisted of photographic images and longer film durations are discussed in terms of casting, and are analyzed according to The Model Acting and The System Acting Theories. In this qualitative case study, behind-scene videos and related expressions of actors have been collected as data, and this data are examined. It can be said that Ceylan, who has been working with professional actors after first-four movies shot with amatuer actors, still has the traces of Model Acting Approach. Moreover, the fact that he edits the script according to the actor, gives the actor some space and lets him or her have an influence on the movie. As a result of Ceylan’s casting, it is seen that the actor choice and the actor him/ herself directly affect the filmic narrative. Further study will enlighten what kind of effects the casting together with the actor directing have on the narrative and the language at cinema.

Bu araştırma, sinemada yönetmenin oyuncu seçiminin bir filmin dilini ve anlatısını ne şekilde etkilediğini anlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’ın sineması ele alınmış olup, filmlerindeki diyalogların artış göstermesi, fotoğrafik imgelerden oluşan sinemasının dramatikleşmesi, film sürelerinin uzaması; oyuncu seçimi bağlamında tartışılmış, Model Oyunculuk ve Sistem Oyunculuk teorileri ışığında analiz edilmiştir. Nitel bir yapıya sahip olan bu vaka çalışmasında; kamera arkası görüntüleri ve oyuncuların durum ile ilgili söylemleri veri olarak toplanmış ve elde edilen veriler çerçevesinde bir inceleme gerçekleştirilmiştir. Amatör oyuncularla çalıştığı ilk dört filminden sonra, profesyonel oyuncularla çalıştığı gözlemlenen Ceylan’ın; hâlâ Model Oyunculuk anlayışından izler taşıdığı ifade edilebilir. Bununla birlikte oyuncuya göre senaryo düzenlemesi yapması, oyuncuya alan açıp filme etki etmesine izin veren bir noktada durmaktadır. Ceylan’ın oyuncu seçimlerinden hareketle, oyuncu seçimi ve oyuncunun kendisinin filmsel anlatıyı doğrudan etkilelediği görülmektedir. Gelecek araştırmalar oyuncu seçimiyle birlikte bunu takip eden oyuncu yönetiminin sinemada anlatıya ve dile ne gibi etkileri olduğuna dair ışık tutacaktır.
