Digitization of Political Communication: Comparative Analysis of Political Parties on Twitter in 2018 Presidential Election

Abstract

The use of social media’s recently become widespread around world. Social media, is used by individuals for various purposes, has also started to be used in political field for purposes such as making propaganda of parties, leaders, candidates in elections, making promises calling out to their voters. The increase in use of social media in the political field enables voters to easily Access candidates and parties. In study, within the scope of the concept of political communication, a comparative analysis of the Twitter accounts of political parties candidates during the 2018 presidential election process in Turkey’s carried out. In context, the concept of political communication and its development are explained and then the use of social media by political parties is explained. In method part of study, the tweets of the political parties and presidential candidates of 2018 were examined. As a result of examinations, the tweets of the candidates that received the most interaction in 2018 Presidential election process were discussed and posts made during said process were examined. Within the scope of tweet content, it’s been observed that candidates mostly use their accounts to criticizerival candidates, parties, to Express their promises-actions, and to inform voters about ralliesand events.
