Taking a photograph of the bed: Bed photographs from a feminist perspective
Abstract
The bed is a carrier of everyday ideology that reveals the relationship between the personal and the political. With this characteristic, it frequently finds its place in critical approaches especially in contemporary art. This study brings together the works of contemporary artists who use the bed as an object of gender critique, and it analyses empty bed photographs of Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Neriman Polat from a feminist perspective. Here, it is discussed how these works have similarities and differences. While Gonzalez-Torres’ images of beds deal with a universal sense of loss and mourning, Polat’s beds criticize domestic oppression. The fact that the beds are photographed as empty in both works creates a formal commonality. However, the meanings represented by the bed diversify through personal experiences and social contexts. In this context, the bed offers a space where the individual and the social intersect and gender norms are questioned.
